Writing For The Masses

I’m excited.

I received a long-awaited email tonight in which I’ve been as a blogger for a pretty sizeable publication. The details haven’t been ironed out yet with the exception that there will be no financial compensation. A few bucks would have  been nice, but the experience and exposure will be  good.

Oh. And I will, by my choice, be writing under a pseudonym. Or no nym at all.  So while the exposure is there, it’ll be veiled.  Because the blog will detail my crazy, insane, partying, boozing days that  lead me to AA.  And as a member of that fellowship, the Eleventh Tradition states; “Our public relations policy is based on attraction rather than promotion; we need always maintain personal anonymity at the level of press, radio, and films.”

Part of the basis for that tradition lies in the fact that celebrities and prominent figures have “joined” AA and loudly proclaimed their recovery and sobriety, only to relapse. And join. And relapse. That behavior can, and often does, send the message that AA doesn’t work.

But it does. For millions. And honestly, I don’t mind if people know I’m a member of AA. I don’t shout it from the rooftops, but I make no attempt to hide it. I’d rather be known as a someone in recovery than the drunk I was. Then I had something to hide.  But no more.

So I will respect the tradition and remain anonymous.

And if people figure it out, that’s okay, too.
